An exciting time is approaching.

ECommerce businesses crawl over each other to discount their wares and get you to buy.

It’s great for customers as you can save on things you’d otherwise pay more for.

But for the sellers it’s more like this.

I’ll put aside the obvious idiocy of training people to buy only on a discount.

There’s something worse.

It’s that hardly anyone will properly welcome their new customers.

And hardly anyone will nurture and value the customer relationship.

The welcome is easy to fix.

Write a fun and interesting email to send them after they buy.

Not the usual thanks for buying here’s your receipt type email.

Something they enjoy reading and begins to bond them with your business.

I’ve only ever seen two really good ones. I’m sure there must be others but it’s horrifyingly rare.

The second mistake is not valuing the customer relationship.

This happens because you don’t understand the lifetime value of each customer.

Happy customers buy more.

Happy customers refer more customers.

Your fundamental job is to create and keep a customer.

Do that better than your competition and you’ll have an incredible business.

Again this can be fixed with simple emails.

Not the catalogue style emails or the regular discounts.

Real human communication to your real human customers.

They have chosen to trust you.

They’ll keep trusting you IF, and only if, you show them they’re important to you.

Again no one really does it.

It means you can lose the customer in the blink of an eye when someone better comes along.

Two huge and expensive problems that ‘so called’ smart business will make this Black Friday.

You now know better.
