There is massive confusion about whether influence is manipulation or not.

Short answer it’s not if you’re genuinely focused on the welfare of the other person.

This week’s topic is something that seems to be in short supply right now.

That’s right to cornerstone of all influence is empathy. Empathy can be defined as – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Seeing the world as they see it.

Thinking what they think.

Feeling what they feel.

It’s so powerful it could actually go a long towards solving many of the most pressing problems facing the world. But that’s a whole nother story.

We are interested in how to use it ethically market out businesses.

Empathy is like a muscle you develop with consistent effort and time.

The starting point is to place the long-term interests of the other person over your own short-term interest in making sales.

That’s why few businesses can do it. But for those that can you immediately place yourself in a category with no competition.

Think about the last time someone demonstrated genuine empathy for you. Be it personal or business. It’s very rare. You can probably count the number of times you’ve experience it in your life on one hand.

I know I can.

But when I experience it, I am utterly blown away.

I hope you’ll embrace a lifelong quest to develop and master empathy.

If you do, you will become the dominant player in your market for a very long time.
